The holiday season isn’t just about shopping — it’s also about shipping. As millions of families send gifts and greetings across the country, the U.S. Postal Service is gearing up for its busiest week of 2025.
Key Holiday Deadlines
To ensure packages arrive before Christmas, USPS recommends the following send-by dates for the contiguous U.S.:
Dec. 17 — USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail
Dec. 18 — Priority Mail
Dec. 20 — Priority Mail Express
For Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Territories, deadlines begin as early as Dec. 16. Customers are encouraged to check local Post Office hours and visit usps.com for details.
Modernization Behind the Scenes
The Postal Service has been preparing for this peak season since January, investing in infrastructure and technology to meet demand:
- 600+ new package sortersinstalled since 2020, boosting daily capacity to 88 million pieces.
- Updated service standardsnow allow for faster 2-3 day regional delivery.
- 36,000 new delivery vehicles already in service, with a total of 106,480 planned — including 66,000 zero-emission electric vehicles.
- Nearly 200 new processing facilitiesopened nationwide in the past four years.
- Workforce stabilitystrengthened by converting 232,000 pre-career employees to full-time and hiring 14,000 seasonal staff this year.
These investments helped USPS outperform competitors last holiday season, delivering 45% more packages and more than 350 million mailpieces per operating day in December 2024.
Convenience for Customers
USPS continues to offer affordable, reliable shipping options:
Ground Advantage: 2–5 business days

Most shipments include $100 insurance and tracking, and customers can access free shipping supplies, stamps, and quick “how-to” video guides online.
Delivering More Than Packages
Beyond logistics, USPS is committed to sustainability, customer convenience, and community connection. Expanded Sunday delivery, enhanced scanning technology, and extended retail hours ensure that holiday mail moves smoothly — while investments in electric vehicles and modern facilities position the Postal Service for a greener, more efficient future.
